Boeing Boeing depicts how intertwined we are as humans. Although we may think we all have separate lives, we are all part of a community called society. Often we lose our path but will rediscover right where we should be time.

During my first meeting with the director, I asked him what he thought the narrative of the story was? He was unsure at the time of the deeper meaning in this comedic work.

I focused my efforts on finding out how I could use sound to enhance the action on stage. I decided to present my sound design in the most realistic and accurate, way possible to juxtapose the many elements of unrealistic action and plot in a subtle way to encourage the average audience member to think more deeply about what they were watching.

Much like Bernard is out of control that is the feeling I want the music to have. I would like for it to prepare the audience to laugh and have a good time. I want it to be fast paced, snappy, rapid, a lot like Bernard’s schedule. Everything in life is getting faster and faster, more and more stressful, we forget to slow down until we are doing too much. We see this happen with Bernard.

The music should make the audience excited, on the edge of their seat, it should be

Bombarding, distracting, frantic, all the music should have a 60s feel with radio static overlaying it.

The music should enhance all that is going on in the scene. I am trying to create as much as I can live and avoid canned sounds as much as possible. The audience should focus on the action of the play rather than a door open and closing that may sound completely realistic.

I think the last song should be much slower after the 3rd act black out and cross fade in to a final song for bows. This is representative of Bernard figuring out his priorities.

I will work to create an environment that makes sense for the world of Boeing Boeing, a world of truthful audio. This kind of sound design would not usually stand out, but when compared with the unbelievably hysterical plot stands out more than usual.

“Practicals" (elements of the show that produce live sound) were how represented a lifelike representation of the sounds we hear. All the sounds on stage will be created live on stage or reproduced through a genuine, working device.
