Why Sound?

I was always taught to express myself. As a child, my time wasn’t spent playing video games or staring at the computer. Instead, I was playing with Legos or Lincoln Logs. Depending on the day, I would go outside and spend hours inventing games to play with my best friends, pretending for example that a stick, a basic and uncomplicated item, could be magic. Magic that could transport us into a world of creativity and imagination. To me, that’s what theatre is. It is a chance to create and reveal an imaginary world that can bring a spark of hope into the darkness.

As a sound designer, I am given the chance to freely create a realm in which the story takes place. Just like as a kid, I use something invisible to create something that can be larger than life. To most people the idea of pursuing sound design as a career is foreign, often I get asked why I want to spend my whole life crafting something that will never be seen. It is that exact reason why I love audio so much! It’s an art form full of emotion, creativity, and flare. No one needs to see it to experience it. It's subjective and always provides a new challenge.

Collaboration is not about gluing together existing egos, it's about the ideas that never existed until everyone was in the room. - Unknown
